Boingo Talks “Location, Location, Location” at CTIA 2013


Every real estate agent, retailer or savvy mobile marketer worth their salt will agree on one thing these days: location is everything.

With more than 5 billion Wi-Fi-enabled devices shipped worldwide to date, consumers are joined at the hip (or hand, or pocket) with their mobile devices and are increasingly looking for a mobile-first experience. The consumer embrace of mobile has opened up nearly endless possibilities to engage customers, allowing retailers to provide place-based mobile coupons for immediate use, airports to deliver wayfinding services to help travelers get to their desired concessions, you name it. And just last week, The New York Times noted that “maps have become essential” in the tech industry, as they are the “gateway” to online and offline commerce.

The key ingredient to delivering these tailored offers and responsive maps is precision location. But though location-based services are increasingly more expected and appreciated by consumers, venues are still grappling with the best way to deploy precision location within an indoor environment away from GPS, and the best technology to do the job.

Boingo’s own Dr. Derek Peterson will address these issues and more as part of CTIA 2013’s only panel focused on location-based services, entitled “(Indoor) Location, Location, Location” on Tuesday, May 21 from 12:15-1:15 p.m.



Derek has been exploring the possibilities presented by location-based services for more than 20 years, starting with his service in the United States Air Force in Desert Storm, and will be joined by fellow panelists from AT&T, Locaid and InvisiTrack, Inc. to discuss some of the hottest –and most hotly debated – topics in precision location and business intelligence today.

The panelists will explore topics including:

  • Definitions: How do we define precision and proximity location today?
  • Leading technologies: In precision location, is there one “silver bullet” technology, or is a network agnostic approach best?
  • New opportunities: What granular analytics are businesses looking for today, and how are they using them to ensure a better customer experience?
  • Privacy: Where’s the line? How can venues fully explore cool opportunities presented by location-based services while maintaining individual privacy?
