Boingo Wireless has been a vital part of the New York transportation scene for more than 20 years, partnering with the MTA and Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) to keep New Yorkers connected with world-class cellular and Wi-Fi networks. MTA Annual Review recently sat down with Boingo CEO Mike Finley at our Rockefeller Center office to discuss Boingo’s work and how we are championing a better New York.

What services does Boingo Wireless provide to New York?

Boingo enables millions of New Yorkers and visitors to stay connected on the go. We’re privileged to support PANYNJ, MTA and the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) by designing, deploying and managing complex 5G networks in places like JFK, LaGuardia, Newark International Airport and Grand Central Madison. Our networks enable passengers to use mobile boarding passes, stream content, and send emails and texts throughout their journey. Boingo networks also securely connect concessions, digital signage and retail kiosks.

How is Boingo working with the MTA to improve transportation systems?

Boingo proudly works with MTA and supports its mission of delivering a safe, reliable and accessible transit system for New York. Our latest project with the MTA includes the brand-new Grand Central Madison, as well as the LIRR Atlantic Branch, to enable a fully connected rider experience.

Why is 5G important for a great rider experience?

Connectivity is critical for all modes of transportation. 5G technologies enhance the rider journey by powering applications like the TrainTime app, MTA’s contactless fare payment system and day-to-day email and texting apps. By combining the best of Wi-Fi, multi-carrier cellular networks and private 5G, Boingo is a single source for all the MTA’s connectivity needs.

Boingo gives back to New York’s communities in a number of ways. What are some of the programs you support?

We’re involved with amazing organizations, such as the New York Hall of Science and Girls Who Code, to support the availability and accessibility of youth science, technology, engineering and math programs. We also run Dress to Success clothing drives and put a focus on hiring minority-and women-owned businesses for network projects, investing in the success of all New Yorkers.
