A Review of the Boingo Wi-Fi Enabled Samsung ST5500/CL80 Digital Camera

[Full disclosure: Boingo and Samsung recently announced Boingo Wi-Fi support for network-enabled Samsung cameras. As part of the launch efforts, Samsung sent me the ST5500/CL80 for evaluation.]

I love taking photos, but I know very little about the art and technology of photography. Exposure level, shutter speed, white balance — huh? If you can relate to this, then maybe you’ll agree that for folks like us, the ideal camera is a point-and-shooter that takes professional quality images.

For the last two weeks, I’ve been snapping photos on the Samsung ST5500/CL80, a compact digital camera that definitely delivers on ease-of-use and quality. But that’s not all. The camera also includes a host of additional features that overall make for quite a cool experience.

So what makes the ST5500/CL80 special? There are three main reasons.

  • Specifications: The camera captures 14.2 megapixel still images, records 720p HD quality video and has a zoom capability of 7x. A 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen is simple, intuitive and fun to use. You’d expect these heavyweight features in a bulkier camera, but the ST5500/CL80 packs it all into a pocket-size form factor. Click here for a complete list of specifications.
  • Sharing capabilities: The camera’s HDMI port allows you to connect and display photos/videos on an HD television monitor. Bluetooth support gives you the option of sending photos to a mobile phone. And with built-in Boingo Wi-Fi, you can email or upload photos/videos directly from the camera from 125,000+ Boingo hotspots worldwide. Watch the demo video above to see how easy it is to connect to Boingo and share your photos online.
  • Built-in photo editing: Who needs Photoshop when you can touch up photos on the camera with just a few button taps? An array of editing effects greatly inspired me to get creative. The video below showcases the photos I took and modified with the ST5500/CL80.

The ST5500/CL80 brings creative, high-quality and easy photography to everyday, amateur consumers. And that’s what makes this Samsung digital camera a game changer. For information on where to buy the ST5500/Cl80, please click here.

What kind of Boingo account is needed for this camera? Can I use my existing account or will I have to buy a dedicated account just for the camera? Can the camera use the WiFi at home/work/etc or does it only connect to Boingo hotspots?

  2. Baochi says:

Hi Adam: the Samsung camera comes with 3 months of complimentary Boingo Wi-Fi. Afterward, you have the option of using your existing Boingo Mobile account (or sign up for an account if you don’t already have one). In addition to Boingo hotspots, the camera works on your home and office Wi-Fi network. It’s great!
