At a glance:

  • What: The stacking of a new cellular tower to expand base-wide cellular coverage.
  • Where: Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.
  • Who: A collaboration between Boingo Wireless, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) and Fort Meade.
  • Impact: Enhanced connectivity for 64,000 daily workers and 12,000 residents. As Fort Meade continues to evolve, expanded multi-carrier infrastructure will play a central role in supporting warfighters and everyday connectivity across the installation.

Boingo is upgrading Fort Meade’s wireless foundation by deploying a new multi-carrier cellular tower. This infrastructure is designed to support AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. This project marks the third Boingo deployment on the installation and provides the wireless foundation required for the tens of thousands of personnel who rely on routine wireless communication daily.

Leadership from Fort Meade, AAFES and Boingo gathered to mark the stacking of the new tower. This milestone reflects a commitment to investing in infrastructure that keeps pace with the needs of the Fort Meade community.

“Another phenomenal effort to increase throughput capacity for the devices and networks that we all have come to rely on in our daily lives,” said Deputy Garrison Commander Brian Foley.

Delivering reliable coverage across a base of this scale requires a sophisticated deployment model that supports multiple carriers.

  • Neutral host tower: The tower is designed to provide high-speed coverage from AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, ensuring comprehensive service across the post.
  • Community impact: The upgrade improves connectivity for the 64,000 people who work on post daily and the 12,000 residents who call Fort Meade home.
  • Quality of life: Reliable signals support essential needs, from telemedicine and online education to staying in touch with loved ones.

This project highlights Boingo’s deep connection to the military community. The tower stacking crew included three Veterans—two Army and one Air Force—who brought firsthand experience and technical expertise to the installation.

“At Boingo, we’re proud to have veterans working on our team—people who have worked and lived on these bases,” said Boingo CEO Mike Finley. “Whether someone is supporting a mission or calling home at the end of the day, that connection matters and it needs to be dependable”.

Carla McDowell, AAFES Vice President of Services Operations, noted that this enhancement will improve the quality of life for service members and their families while supporting the continued mission to serve “the best customers in the world.”
