Boingo Private Cellular Networks can now leverage Google Distributed Cloud Edge to deliver 5G and edge use cases

Professional sports teams are prioritizing next generation connectivity to elevate game day experiences and overcome operational hurdles. From mobile ticketing and contactless concessions to facial authentication, AR/VR and sports betting, 5G networks seamlessly connect stadium operations while ensuring stable and reliable connectivity for fans.

At Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, Boingo Wireless launched and manages a private cellular network to power mobile applications and make the fan experience more convenient and immersive. The 5G-ready network delivers back-of-house wireless coverage to Gallagher Square, a community gathering space inside Petco Park where over 14,000 fans can catch games, enjoy concerts and attend special events.

More than 1,000 game day staff at Petco Park can rely on Boingo’s network to process credit card payments, Apple/Google Pay concessions and mobile ticketing.

“The Boingo Private Cellular Network moves our operational traffic off public cellular and Wi-Fi networks to connect more devices and reduce congestion. Having a reliable, secure network in place makes the purchasing process at Petco Park completely frictionless—which is great for fans and great for our business,” said Ray Chan, vice president of IT for the San Diego Padres.

SCALING DATA-DRIVEN OPERATIONS WITH GOOGLE DISTRIBUTED CLOUD EDGE

To further accelerate 5G innovation at Petco Park and other stadiums, Boingo is among the first managed network providers to adopt the new Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) Edge portfolio for private networks.

Google Cloud’s infrastructure offers flexibility to scale new edge use cases and security sensitive applications on Boingo’s networks with low latency and strict carrier-grade Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Boingo will operate its Private Cellular Network at Petco Park with GDC Edge to expand data insights, manage current use cases and lay the foundation for immersive 5G experiences, robotics, video surveillance and more. Boingo’s network also leverages Athonet mobile core for scalable digital transformation.

“Boingo Private Networks for the enterprise are unmatched. They are built for heterogeneous environments where network uptime, reliability and security are paramount. Leveraging Google Cloud for our private networks is part of Boingo’s hybrid, multi-cloud network management approach where we deploy the right technology for the right use case and outcome. We’re pleased to offer this innovative cloud architecture to Petco Park,” said Dr. Derek Peterson, chief technology officer, Boingo.

“We are excited to work with Boingo to deliver both transformative fan experiences and reliable connectivity for venue operations at Petco Park and beyond, all through end-to-end private cellular networks built on Google Distributed Cloud Edge,” said Tanuj Raja, Global Director, Strategic Partnerships, Google Cloud.

Boingo can deploy GDC Edge on-premise for customers to meet network capacity and coverage requirements, data processing, data protection and low latency applications all within one centralized, automated environment.
