FREMONT, Calif. – May 9, 2017 – The MulteFire Alliance, an independent, diverse and international member-driven consortium that is defining and promoting MulteFire™, today announced that Boingo Wireless has joined CableLabs, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Nokia and Qualcomm on its board of directors. Boingo is a leading DAS and Wi-Fi provider with a footprint of wireless networks that reach more than 1 billion consumers annually.
“Meeting industry and consumer requirements for high-bandwidth, reliable and secure wireless connectivity for the connected world requires industry collaboration and vision for how the networks of the future will be designed with MulteFire,” said Stephan Litjens, MulteFire Alliance Board Chair and vice president, Innovation Steering at Nokia. “As a global operator, Boingo brings to the Alliance board valuable expertise with Wi-Fi, cellular, and neutral host network deployments on a large scale, and will help us take MulteFire technology from published specification to real-world implementation.”
Based on 3GPP standards, MulteFire is an LTE-based technology for standalone operation in unlicensed and shared spectrum. The MulteFire Release 1.0 specification, published in January 2017 to Alliance members, was made available for public download in April 2017. Alliance members are working on the Release 1.1 specification that will add further mobility enhancements and IoT optimizations, as well as certification program development.
“Boingo is honored to join a prestigious group of executive board members who share a common vision for unlicensed spectrum and the role it will play in powering future connectivity,” said Derek Peterson, Ph.D., chief technology officer at Boingo and newly elected MulteFire Alliance board member. “Our experience deploying both licensed and unlicensed networks for more than 15 years will bring MulteFire unique perspective as it continues on its path to redefine next-generation mobile cellular technology.”
The Alliance also welcomes seven new members, including Charter Communications, DAS Worldwide (soon to be Wave Wireless), DEKRA, Foxconn, RTX A/S, Sierra Wireless and ViaSat, adding additional diverse expertise to the Alliance’s membership base.
