Boingo to Display Wi-Fi Roaming on Nokia S60 Smartphone Platform at 3GSM World Congress
Joins Forum Nokia PRO and PRO Enterprise Zone Developer Programs
3GSM World Congress, Barcelona, Spain – February 12th, 2007 – Boingo Wireless Inc., the world’s leading wholesale network aggregator and operator of neutral-host Wi-Fi networks, today announced it has joined the Forum Nokia PRO and PRO Enterprise Zone programs and will be demonstrating its embedded Wi-Fi toolkit at the Nokia booth in Hall #8 at 3GSM World Congress, February 12-15, 2007 in Barcelona.
Forum Nokia PRO is a program that provides advanced technical, business development and marketing support to selected mobile software companies The PRO Enterprise Zone program promotes application and solution development for Nokia Series S60-based business handsets.
As a member of these programs, Boingo has the opportunity to further strengthen its relationship with Nokia, gain early access to Nokia technology and take advantage of specialized service and support provided by Nokia to help Boingo stand out in the marketplace. The company will work with Nokia’s Enterprise Solutions business unit to integrate Wi-Fi roaming solutions into Nokia's S60 enterprise phones and ensure close integration of its software with these devices.
At 3GSM World Congress, the company will demonstrate a version of its toolkit for Symbian OS-based S60 smartphones. S60 is the world’s leading smartphone platform, with more than 70 million devices already in the market. The S60 smartphone architecture provides users with all the basic and advanced cellular phone functions in a compact device characterized by a large color screen, rich communications and enhanced applications.
Boingo’s open-source Wi-Fi toolkit is being embedded on handsets and other mobile devices and sniffs, authenticates and connects the device to a Wi-Fi hotspot, all without user intervention. These capabilities enable the devices to seamlessly roam on public Wi-Fi hotspots. In addition to the Symbian version being shown at 3GSM, the toolkit is currently available in Linux, BREW and Windows Mobile versions.
“Adding Wi-Fi roaming capabilities to a dual-mode handset is a crucial step for these devices to become useful tools and open up new services for users and opportunities for carriers,” said Jonathan Mendelson, Boingo director of business development – devices. “We look forward to working closely with Nokia in this initiative and appreciate the vote of confidence the company has shown in our solution by inviting Boingo to participate in its 3GSM booth.”
The industry-leading S60 platform, built on Symbian OS, is licensed by some of the foremost mobile phone manufacturers in the world. The flexibility of the S60 software allows for various hardware designs and software configurations, as evidenced by the multitude of S60 devices already available on the market. Through its award-winning user interface, extensive support for new mobile services and the innovation potential for partner solutions, the S60 provides an open and scalable business opportunity for mobile operators and 3rd party developers.
