Boingo Adds World’S Largest City-Wide Wi-Fi Network to Roaming System
Boingo partners with WIFLY, Q-Ware Systems to expand network in Taiwan to include Taipei’s metro network and café chains like Starbucks locations to global roaming system
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – July 25th, 2006 – Boingo Wireless, the world’s leading Wi-Fi service provider for business travelers, today announced a roaming agreement with Q-Ware Systems of Taiwan that adds its network of Wi-Fi hotspots – including Taipei City’s WIFLY city-wide wireless network - to the worldwide Boingo® Roaming System.
Boingo is the first foreign service provider to be granted roaming access to the WIFLY network. As a result, Boingo Roaming System subscribers traveling to the country will now be able to access both the Taipei City metro Wi-Fi network and all Starbucks locations across Taiwan through their easy-to-use Boingo software.
Launched in Dec. 2005, the Taipei City network is the first metro network implementation in Asia. Known as WIFLY, the metro Wi-Fi network uses approximately 4,100 access points (APs) throughout 42 main roads in Taipei, providing wireless signal coverage to most residential and business/commercial districts.
The network makes Taipei the world’s largest wireless city in terms of scale, number of APs, and speed of installation, and provides citizens with Internet access anywhere and anytime in addition to a range of planned e-government and e-lifestyle services. Q-Ware built the network in close collaboration with the Taipei City Government. WIFLY was recently recognized by Jiwire as the largest wireless city in the world as measured by the number of access points.
Taiwan joins China and Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and Singapore as major Asian business hubs covered by the Boingo network.
“This agreement marks a number of milestones for Boingo in Asia. It represents our first metro-wide deployment in the region, extends our Asian network, and perhaps most notably, we are honored to be the first roaming partner to work with Q-Ware and Taipei City, enabling our subscribers to have access to this network,” said Allen Pan, Boingo director of network strategy for Asia-Pacific.
“Partnering with Boingo will allow us to continue the progress we’re making, and the potential traffic that Boingo can bring to the network from outside of Taiwan will serve to grow our network and help us more rapidly deploy Wi-Fi communications throughout the country,” said Sheng Chang vice president, Q-Ware Systems.
45,581 Reasons to Use Boingo
Boingo gives business travelers the best choice of Wi-Fi hotspots by combining over 45,000 locations from more than 130 leading Wi-Fi operators into one worldwide network. Boingo users can connect to any of these locations with a single Boingo account using Boingo's free Wi-Fi client software, which combines more than 450 network names into one "Boingo Wireless" network to simplify identifying and connecting to commercial Wi-Fi networks.
The program provides partners with access to this network, customized client software, and a full suite of back-office billing, roaming, mediation and clearinghouse services to allow them to offer their own Wi-Fi service quickly and cost effectively. To date, the company has announced Platform Services partnerships with BT Infonet, Earthlink, Fiberlink, Nextel Communications, MCI, and Telecom Italia.
