Connecting to the Internet

How do I connect to Boingo Wi-Fi on my laptop?

There are two ways to connect on your laptop: through your browser or through the Boingo app.

Connecting through your browser:

  1. Simply select and connect to the “Boingo Hotspot” SSID or a Boingo partner SSID from the network list.
  2. Launch your Internet browser to access the Boingo page. Note: You may need to attempt to load a new URL to prompt the Boingo page.

  4. Select “Connect” from the app. Browse the Internet at super-fast Wi-Fi speeds.

Connecting through the Boingo app (preferred):

  1. Download the Boingo app for laptops. (It’s small, free, and very handy! You’ll only need to do this once.)
  2. In a Boingo hotspot, the Boingo app will automatically “pop up.”
  3. Log in using your username and password. (You only need to do this once; the app will store them for the next time.)
  4. Launch your Internet browser.
  5. Browse the Internet at super-fast Wi-Fi speeds.

How do I use my Boingo account to connect to Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi?

Getting online at 10,000 feet couldn’t be easier:

Just log in using the Boingo Wi-Finder app or the Roaming Login link located on the Gogo home page, and we’ll take it from there.

A couple of important things to keep in mind:

* Gogo in-flight is considered a “premium” location and is not included in any Boingo subscription plans. Laptop and tablet users will be charged a one-time fee of $4.95 USD per connection and varies based on the duration of the flight. When you connect to Gogo using your Boingo account, the charge will appear on your Boingo statement.

* In order to access in-flight Wi-Fi, you’ll need the most recent version of the Boingo Wi-Finder software, which you can download here.

I am having trouble connecting on my laptop. Are there some basic things I can do to get online?

  • First, please restart your computer. Rebooting your laptop will often correct connection problems.
  • Be sure your Wi-Fi is turned on. Most computers have a Wi-Fi switch. If your computer does not have a Wi-Fi switch, please go to Internet options on your computer and verify your wireless LAN (WLAN) connection is enabled. If it is not enabled, right click and enable it.
  • If you are using the Boingo app, please check that your username and password are stored correctly. If you updated your password online or with a Boingo Customer Care agent, you also need to manually update it in your app settings.
  • Check your signal. Right click on the wireless icon in the system tray, select “View Wireless Networks” and select a network from the list presented.
  • If your computer indicates that it is connected, but the browser says “page cannot be displayed,” then please verify your home page. Your home page may be set to your company intranet. Simply type any publicly-accessible web site into the address bar (such as https://www.boingo.com) and you will be online or redirected to the signup page.
  • If you continue to have trouble, please contact Boingo Customer Care.

I am having trouble connecting on my mobile device. Are there some basic things I can do to get online?

  • First, please check to be sure your Wi-Fi is “on” (if applicable). This option is usually located in the Settings menu.
  • Check that your username and password are stored correctly in the Boingo app. If you updated your password online or with a Boingo Customer Care agent, you also need to manually update it in your app settings.
  • Check your signal. From the Settings menu, select “Wi-Fi” and then choose “Boingo Hotspot” SSID or a Boingo partner SSID from the network list (a sample list is below). Note: Some partner SSID networks do not support mobile devices.

I am having trouble connecting on the Washington State Ferries. Are there some basic things I can do to get online?

In addition to the suggestions above, there are additional steps you can take to get online at the Washington State Ferries.

  • Terminal to Ferry: When moving from the terminal to the ferry, or vice versa, it may be necessary to restart your laptop or mobile device to reconnect. Please wait until the boat has departed from the dock to restart. Doing so will give you a new IP address, which is necessary to connect to the network. Please note our engineers are working diligently to eliminate this step, so it will become unnecessary to re-establish an IP address in the future. In the meantime, here are instructions for acquiring a new IP address:
    • PC laptops and netbooks
      • Go to Start Menu, click Shut Down, and then select Restart from the drop down menu.
    • Mac laptops
      • In three steps: Click the Apple icon, restart, and choose restart to confirm.
      • Without restarting: Click the Airport icon, turn Airport “Off”, wait a few seconds, and then turn Airport “On.”
    • iPhone, iPod Touches, and iPads
      • Go to Settings, Wi-Fi, and click on the arrow for the network with the check mark by it (should be “Boingo Hotspot”). Then at the bottom click “Renew Lease”.
    • Windows Mobile devices
      • Go to Start, Settings, and Connections. Select Wi-Fi, Advanced, and under the Advance Tab click “Renew IP”.
    • Android devices
      • Power down and power up.
  • On Ferry: Wi-Fi service on the ferries is unusually complex because of its unconventional infrastructure. Wireless signal from the ferry network to the shore covers a specific route. Factors such as the location of the boat or the weather could affect this signal quality. This issue typically resolves itself within 5-10 minutes. Please try to be patient and connect again shortly.
    • Be sure your Wi-Fi is turned on.
    • Most computers have a Wi-Fi switch. If your computer does not have a Wi-Fi switch, go to Internet options on your computer and verify your wireless LAN (WLAN) connection is enabled. If it is not enabled, right click and enable it.
    • Most mobile devices offer Wi-Fi on/off options in the Settings menu.

Which SSID should I choose to connect using Boingo?

An SSID is an available Wi-Fi network signal name. For example, the SSID that Boingo owns is “Boingo Hotspot”. Boingo partners with hundreds of hotspot operators with many different SSIDs. Some examples include:

  • Boingo Hotspot
  • ATL-WIFI
  • MIA-WiFi
  • tmobile
  • swisscom
  • Tengo Internet
  • ibahn
  • orange
  • MOBILE
  • BTOpenzone
  • WIFI-AIRPORT
  • Toronto Pearson Wi-Fi
  • NESPOT
  • infinitum movil
  • ChinaNet
  • CHT Wi-Fi (HiNet)
  • Wayport Access
  • Beeline WiFi
  • PCCW
  • attwifi
  • CMCC
  • TI mycloud
  • homerun
  • WiFi Zone – The Cloud

Luckily, if you have the Boingo app, you don’t need to memorize this list! Simply download and install the Boingo app. The app will store your username and password, automatically alert you when you’re in a Boingo hotspot, and get you online with one click.

If you have a mobile device, you may need to connect to an SSID manually once before our app will connect you automatically. This is due to the way some mobile device providers have structured their connect rules.

If you’d like to learn more about the app, please click here.

Note: Some partner SSID networks do not support mobile devices.

Is my Wi-Fi connection with Boingo secure?

Boingo offers a secure signup and authentication process. Once you are online using either a Boingo or partner SSID, you should make sure you’re on an SSL-secured site (https://…), or using a VPN to encrypt anything you send – just as you would from your home or work Internet connection.

Fraudulent SSIDs do exist, so be sure you are using a Boingo or partner SSID. “Free Public Wi-Fi” signals can be, and usually are, fraudulent, especially when they are “Ad-hoc” or “Computer to Computer” signals. If you are unsure, please don’t hesitate to contact Boingo Customer Care to confirm your SSID. Additionally, you can download the Boingo app to help you connect automatically to Boingo-authorized SSID networks. Here’s more information about “Free Public Wi-Fi” signals.

Is the Wi-Fi network affecting my cellphone data service (3G or 4G)?

In short, no. It’s technically impossible for Wi-Fi to interfere with cellular service, and it’s actually illegal for anyone to interfere with cellular transmission. For the tech geeks among us, Wi-Fi and cellular data run on different frequencies, so they don’t directly interfere with each other.

Cellular service is also delivered over licensed spectrum, meaning that your service provider owns that specific frequency range, to ensure they can provide service without interference. It is possible for things like Bluetooth and microwaves to interfere with Wi-Fi, because they all use the same unlicensed spectrum frequencies. But none of those technologies can interfere with your cellphone Internet service.

What is the difference between Wi-Fi and cellular data (3G and 4G)?

There are many technical responses to this question, but here is the answer most of us can understand. Hooray!

In general, cellular data service is available from your mobile carrier. The service covers a large areas – as in miles and miles usually. Customers typically purchase a plan that allows them to download a specific amount of data each period (2 GB, 5 GB, etc.). Cellular data is great for simple Internet activities, such as checking email and Facebook because it tends to be rather slow.

Wi-Fi is an Internet signal that is location-based, meaning the signal is broadcast across smaller areas, such as your home, the airport, your favorite coffee shop, etc. And what Wi-Fi lacks in range, it makes up for in speed – it’s super fast! Wi-Fi is great for “data intensive” activities such as VoIP (think Skype), streaming video, downloading music, etc.

Many mobile devices have the ability to connect to one or more of these Internet signals. Devices with both options often let you choose your connection type. Wi-Fi is a great way to offset what can be costly cellular data plans because with Wi-Fi, there’s usually no limit on the amount of data you are “allowed” to consume. Plus, again, it’s faster!

Here’s a little tech-talk so you can impress your friends. Cellular data Internet connections are broadcast in the 800-900 or 1900-2100 Mhz range. Wi-Fi is broadcast at 2400 Mhz (which means it can’t interfere with cellular in case you were wondering). Here’s more info from Brian Cooley of CNET.

Can I use streaming video, video conference or VoIP (Voice over IP) on the Boingo network?

Absolutely! Boingo Wi-Fi makes streaming video, VoIP calls and sending large files easy. Please note: Some of our partner in-flight Wi-Fi operators may restrict these data-intensive activities.

What is a roaming partner?

A “roaming partner” is any wireless hotspot provider that also allows Boingo customers to log on, or “roam,” onto their network using a Boingo username and password.

Note: Some partner SSID networks do not support mobile devices.

How do I know when I’m in a Boingo hotspot?

There are two easy ways to find Boingo hotspots: Boingo’s Location Directory and Boingo app.

  • Our Location Directory allows you to search for hotspots in many ways, including by ZIP code, by airport code, by city or even by retailer. Search our network of more than 1 million hotspots for a hotspot near you!
  • The Boingo app will automatically alert you whenever you’re in a Boingo hotspot. It stores your username and password, so you’ll have one-click access to super-fast Wi-Fi. Simply download it on your laptop (strongly recommended) or mobile device (required) to get online in an instant!

Why does Boingo “hijack” my connection when I’m trying to use 3G/4G?

We’re not hijacking anything, promise! It all comes down to how mobile device operating systems are designed. Android and iOS are built to auto-connect to known Wi-Fi networks whenever one is available. Unfortunately, the operating systems aren’t always smart enough to know whether the network is open to the Internet or requires you to log in with a username and password (sometimes iOS will prompt you with the login screen, but sometimes it won’t).

The good news is that the Wi-Fi industry (including Boingo) is currently working with the cellular industry to create seamless Wi-Fi authentication to optimize your experience and make Wi-Fi connection and authentication happen like magic. Overall, most industry experts expect that this will start rolling out in 2013 and be widespread by 2015.

But until your mobile provider supports seamless authentication, Wi-Fi roaming apps like Boingo Wi-Finder help expedite the process of connecting to Wi-Fi with a single click.

Boingo Wi-Finder is asking whether it can accept Terms of Service on my behalf. What does this mean?

Boingo Wi-Finder is asking whether it can accept Terms of Service on my behalf. What does this mean?

Boingo Wi-Finder may detect some third party companies operating Wi-Fi networks that may require acceptance to a user agreement, Terms of Service or other click-through contract (“TOS”) before access is granted to their networks. You can use Boingo Wi-Finder to automatically accept these agreements on your behalf.

The first time you use Boingo Wi-Finder at a free hotspot location, you’ll receive a pop-up notification, which will ask whether you want to use the Boingo Wi-Finder tool to automatically connect you to free third party Wi-Fi networks.

If you check the Terms of Service box, Boingo Wi-Finder will automatically accept all Terms of Service agreements on your behalf. Please keep in mind that if you select this option, you (and not Boingo) will assent to the Terms of Service of any third party Wi-Fi providers to which Boingo Wi-Finder connects.

If you prefer to review all Terms of Service agreements yourself, please do not check this box. You will still be able to manually search for third party Wi-Fi networks.

Boingo Wi-Finder is asking whether I want to auto-connect to free hotspots. What does this mean?

What if I configure Boingo Wi-Finder to auto-connect and accept Terms of Service on my behalf, but then change my mind?

If you decide to use the Boingo Wi-Fi Finder tool to automatically connect to third party networks and, if applicable, accept their Terms of Service agreements, you may change your mind and opt out of these settings anytime in the “Account” menu.*

Why does Wi-Finder prompt me to connect twice?
