3GSM World Congress, Barcelona, Spain – Feb. 12, 2007 – Boingo Wireless Inc., the world's leading wholesale network aggregator and operator of neutral-host Wi-Fi networks, today announced that Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI) has adopted the Boingo® Wi-Fi Embedded Toolkit for use in its Wi-Fi phone reference design. The Wi-Fi toolkit will make ASTRI's Wi-Fi phone capable of roaming at tens of thousands of commercial hotspots around the world.
ASTRI has developed the W-iSIP, a turnkey Wi-Fi phone reference design that leverages Linux for cost-effectiveness and ASTRI's own VoIP protocol software for high performance and robust SIP features. The W-iSIP comes with a complete software development kit (SDK) for customizing a wide range of voice quality and functionality features.
The Boingo Embedded Wi-Fi Toolkit enables handsets and other mobile devices to easily and transparently authenticate to Boingo's Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide. Users will be able to turn on their devices and enjoy a broadband Wi-Fi connection when in range of any Boingo Hot Spot in venues such as hotels, airports, convention centers, and retail stores around the world.
"Wi-Fi phones are opening up a new market for low-cost mobile calling, which is really only fulfilled if the device can roam onto public hotspots," said Jonathan Mendelson, director of business development for devices at Boingo Wireless. "ASTRI is a world-class research company with cutting-edge technologies, and its selection of the Boingo Embedded Wi-Fi toolkit is a visionary statement that roaming will be an essential part of the next-generation of Wi-Fi phone designs."
"Our expertise at ASTRI lies in VoIP protocol, wireless communication, high mobility and cost-effectiveness of the solution," said Dennis Lee, director of business development at Enterprise & Consumer Electronics Group of ASTRI. "In Boingo, we have found a partner with tens of thousands of global points of presence that provide extensive public area coverage to our Wi-Fi handsets".
Boingo and ASTRI are working together to develop and field test the Wi-Fi toolkit's integration into the W-iSIP phone in both Hong Kong and North America. OEMs and ODMs who are interested in adopting the W-iSIP platform, including Boingo's commercial Wi-Fi roaming capabilities, should contact ASTRI.
ASTRI W-iSIP Wi-Fi Phone is a high performance and cost effective reference design. It is a complete turnkey solution for phone manufacturers to make a SIP-compliant Wi-Fi-enabled VoIP phone. Bundling with a complete telephony suite, W-iSIP Wi-Fi Phone offers a solid platform of superior voice quality, Wi-Fi hotspot access, Wi-Fi mobility, software SDK and production tools.
