In the demonstration, a user with a dual-mode (cellular and Wi-Fi) smartphone can seamlessly roam between mobile and VoIP when entering into a hotspot. Handsets that have automatically authenticated to the hotspot will be able to use the connection for VoIP or other applications on Wi-Fi.

OTA Provisioning
The demonstration begins when a user connects to a private Wi-Fi network, which enables the handset to be remotely provisioned with Boingo Wireless account credentials via Boingo’s configuration server. Once the handset has been provisioned with authentication credentials for access to the Boingo Roaming Network, the new Wi-Fi toolkit from Boingo can auto-connect and authenticate to more than 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide – as well as any private networks configured by the user.

Application Convergence
After the handset is automatically provisioned for commercial Wi-Fi access, the demonstration uses BridgePort Networks’ NomadicONE NCG to enable seamless mobile to VoIP roaming, showing how a user entering a public Wi-Fi hotspot from a mobile environment can automatically switch networks and make and receive voice or VoIP calls, using a single mobile phone number over the Wi-Fi network as well as the mobile network.

WorldCell, a leading wireless services company providing global voice and data mobile services for government, enterprise and mobile professionals, provided the GSM network services used in the demonstration.
