Boingo Roams with KT Adding 14,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots in Korea to Boingo Network
Boingo grows to 45,000 hotspots worldwide, with 17,000 locations in Asia
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – May 9th, 2006 – Boingo Wireless today announced a roaming agreement with KT, the largest service provider in South Korea, that will add 14,000 hotspots to Boingo’s global Wi-Fi network. The agreement marks Boingo’s entry into the South Korean market and increases its worldwide hotspot total to more than 45,000 locations.
KT is one of the world’s largest hotspot operators and is a founding member of the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA). Key locations in KT’s NESPOT wireless network include Seoul’s Incheon International Airport and Gimpo Airport, the country’s largest domestic terminal. Across the country, hotspots are located in restaurants, cafes, hotels, bus terminals, train stations, convention centers and other convenient locations. These include Hilton and Intercontinental hotels; Hard Rock Café, House of Blues, McDonald’s and Lotteria restaurants.
KT’s success with Wi-Fi builds on its aggressive rollout of broadband Internet services, which has helped South Korea become one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. KT has more than 500,000 subscribers to its Wi-Fi services.
“The prevalence of Wi-Fi throughout Korea makes it very convenient to be productive when traveling here and that is thanks to KT’s commitment to deploying a high-performance, secure network,” said Allen Pan, Boingo director of network strategy for Asia-Pacific. “Adding the KT network to Boingo’s Wi-Fi service makes life much easier for the Boingo customer traveling in Korea.”
“We have a mandate from our customers to make the Internet accessible to them anytime and anywhere — because they have come to rely on it for much of the information they need in daily life,” said HyunTae Jang, director, mobile service department of KT. “Our strategy is to make this network as widely available as possible, with strong commitments to roaming and to working with industry leaders like Boingo.”
With the addition of KT’s hotspots, the Boingo® Roaming System now includes more than 17,000 locations throughout Asia.
