Business Context
The Wi-Fi hotspot market is characterized by hundreds of operators using uncoordinated authentication and security methods. Even the WISPr standard has been implemented in many different ways, so considerable complexity remains left exposed at the client level. This creates great difficulty when trying to enable seamless Wi-Fi connectivity for the end user. Embedded devices, such as phone handsets and mobile gaming consoles, have limited processing and man-machine interface (MMI) options. These limitations call for a flexible yet efficient methodology by which a handset can not only detect but also auto-authenticate onto any public or private Wi-Fi hotspot.
Boingo seeks to provide ubiquitous Wi-Fi connectivity for both public and private hotspots while streamlining and automating the user experience . With the largest aggregated Wi-Fi network in the world – coupled with best-in-class software solutions for both laptops and portable devices – Boingo works tirelessly to ensure that its customers can connect quickly and easily to a high-quality broadband wireless connection. Its offerings include both client and server/backend software solutions that facilitate the detection, connection and authentication of a device onto the Boingo Roaming Network. As the illustration at right shows, Boingo maintains a very focused role as an aggregator within the Wi-Fi ecosystem.
The company doesn’t operate its own network nor does it deploy hotspots of its own. Its goals are to (i) provide the largest network of public hotspots worldwide and (ii) provide tools to the market that make connecting to hotspots as easy as possible.
