October is one of my favorite months with the Exceeding Expectations kids. As you all know, our top priority for the kids is, and always will be, education. That said, every October we participate in two athletic events that I feel are significant in laying the groundwork necessary for them to be successful in the academic world and in their adult lives. The first of these events is the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) triathlon, aptly called “The Best Day in Triathlon.” Here’s a brief overview from their website: “In 1994, three friends started a triathlon fundraiser to help one man regain his independence after a tragic accident left him a quadriplegic. From one came many, and Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) took root in the belief that sports and an active lifestyle are a pathway to more in life. Since that fundraiser 25 years ago, CAF has been committed to breaking the financial barrier that individuals with physical challenges face to participate in sports and live a healthy and active lifestyle.” Participating alongside challenged athletes in a very tough race gives our kids an additional perspective on their own lives. Boingo CEO Dave Hagan recently talked with financial media company The Street about Boingo’s recent IPO, the Internet market and what’s next for Boingo. Watch the video to learn all about it. Here are the interview highlights on Dave’s vision and strategy for Boingo Wireless: What makes Boingo different from most IPO companies: we’re a strong, stable and profitable business. We’re seeing huge demand for Wi-Fi among mobile device users, especially those connecting on iPads and other tablets. Our wholesale, private-label service (for partners such as Verizon and Skype) continues to be a strong growth channel in addition to our Wi-Fi options for direct consumers. Our plan is to build out new Wi-Fi networks and locations worldwide. We will work with many of our existing partners to help with this effort. The proliferation of Internet-enabled devices along with increasing consumer demand for bandwidth have created a capacity crunch on cellular networks. Thus, expanding Wi-Fi networks is more critical than ever and that’s where Boingo comes in. We’re excited about our growth and initiatives. Good work, boss! Great tie, too! We’re super excited to share the news that today we’re launching our best app yet – Boingo Wi-Finder! As you know, Boingo software has always made it easy to get online at paid hotspots around the world. Now we’re expanding that capability to find and get you connected to FREE hotspots, too! Boingo Wi-Finder quickly connects you to open networks worldwide, like the free Wi-Fi at your neighborhood library or even an exotic coffee shop in a far-away land. Simply select “Connect” when Boingo Wi-Finder pops and you’re in. We’ve also added map and search tools that can find the nearest hotspot. And even cooler — the app automatically grabs information about free hotspots you connect to – like location and speed – and then publishes that information to the Location Database. The more people use the app, the better the Location Directory gets. (So tell your friends!) You can even add your favorite free hotspot directly here. We think Boingo Wi-Finder is our coolest app yet – here’s just a sample of what’s under the hood!
