October is one of my favorite months with the Exceeding Expectations kids.  As you all know, our top priority for the kids is, and always will be, education. That said, every October we participate in two athletic events that I feel are significant in laying the groundwork necessary for them to be successful in the academic world and in their adult lives.  The first of these events is the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) triathlon, aptly called “The Best Day in Triathlon.” Here’s a brief overview from their website:  “In 1994, three friends started a triathlon fundraiser to help one man regain his independence after a tragic accident left him a quadriplegic. From one came many, and Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) took root in the belief that sports and an active lifestyle are a pathway to more in life. Since that fundraiser 25 years ago, CAF has been committed to breaking the financial barrier that individuals with physical challenges face to participate in sports and live a healthy and active lifestyle.”  Participating alongside challenged athletes in a very tough race gives our kids an additional perspective on their own lives. The racers on the course with them face obstacles that they

Now Boarding LA: Architecture of Flight Exhibit Delights at Santa Monica Museum of Flying

-

The first phase of the highly anticipated $1.5 billion Tom Bradley International Terminal expansion at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will soon be open for business, creating a beautiful, modern portal to the rest of the world befitting the City of Angels. To celebrate, the Santa Monica Museum of Flying showcases the architecture and planning behind the expansion and highlights the future look of the finished terminal in its new exhibit, Now Boarding: Fentress Airports + the Architecture of Flight.  We got a sneak peek at a recent special event that also included a vintage flight attendant uniform fashion show, a surprise opera solo, and a personalized tour of the exhibit. Our favorite installation is a detailed 24-foot scale model of the new terminal, which took 8,000+ hours to build. It is enormously impressive, to say the least. Here it is: The soon-to-be-opened new international terminal at LAX is designed to optimize efficiency, decrease wait times, and help passengers get through security as quickly as possible — and on to their final destinations in optimal shape. The design also features a high-end retail and shopping area emphasizing local Los Angeles vendors and restaurants, for those tourists who didn’t get enough

ICSC MOCIAL: Mobile+Social+Local Conference to Highlight “Wi-Fi @ Retail”

-

Mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are now items most of us never leave home without, even on a trip to the mall. In fact, a recent study found that more than 50% of smartphone users research products while they’re in a store, a habit dubbed “showrooming” – just one new consumer connectivity trend that presents both opportunities and challenges for retailers. The International Council of Shopping Centers’ MOCIAL: Mobile+Social+Local Conference in Orlando, Florida will feature digital and marketing experts discussing the trends shaping the industry – including our own Dawn Callahan, Boingo vice president of consumer marketing. Dawn will be hosting a “MOCIAL Foundations Series” presentation entitled “Wi-Fi @ Retail: The Intersection of Bricks, Clicks and Mobile,” which will explore retail connectivity trends and new ways that Wi-Fi can help retailers defend against “showrooming,” better understand customer behavior, and drive customers that last 500 feet into the store, while increasing shopper satisfaction, loyalty and brand engagement. If you’ll be attending MOCIAL, make plans to attend Dawn’s presentation tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 7 at 9:45 a.m. ET to learn more. If you can’t make it to the event, never fear – we’ll have a full conference recap right here next week,

Nashville Airport Wins 2011 Best Airport Concessions Program — Hooray!

-

Congratulations to Nashville International Airport (BNA) for winning the 2011 Richard A. Griesbach Award of Excellence, an annual ACI-NA accolade that recognizes the best overall airport concessions program! Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) evaluates airports in Canada and the U.S. across seven concession categories, including food, retail, and customer service. There are three winners in each category but only one victor for the best overall airport concessions program. We’re thrilled for Nashville Airport — and not just because Boingo manages the Wi-Fi network there. Through our frequent visits to BNA, we’ve experienced for ourselves the all-around awesomeness of the airport’s concessions. We’ve indulged in Memphis-style barbecue at the award-winning Neely’s Bar-B-Que, and we’ve sipped on cocktails during music performances at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. Live music, in fact, is what makes BNA extra-special: their “Arts at the Airport” program features a full calendar of live jazz, blues, and good ole country music. The program also showcases a revolving collection of visual arts. Additional nice touches are BNA’s health clinic and green initiatives. We could spend all day exploring the gems at Nashville Airport. Congratulations, BNA team! We’re honored to manage your Wi-Fi service. P.S. If your gadgets are low on battery power, Boingo’s got you covered with charging stations
