Mobile devices like smartphones and tablets are now items most of us never leave home without, even on a trip to the mall. In fact, a recent study found that more than 50% of smartphone users research products while they’re in a store, a habit dubbed “showrooming” – just one new consumer connectivity trend that presents both opportunities and challenges for retailers. The International Council of Shopping Centers’ MOCIAL: Mobile+Social+Local Conference in Orlando, Florida will feature digital and marketing experts discussing the trends shaping the industry – including our own Dawn Callahan, Boingo vice president of consumer marketing. Dawn will be hosting a “MOCIAL Foundations Series” presentation entitled “Wi-Fi @ Retail: The Intersection of Bricks, Clicks and Mobile,” which will explore retail connectivity trends and new ways that Wi-Fi can help retailers defend against “showrooming,” better understand customer behavior, and drive customers that last 500 feet into the store, while increasing shopper satisfaction, loyalty and brand engagement. Through Boingo’s location-based media services, Google Offers is the first brand to reach one of the most connected, mobile commerce savvy, always on-the-go audiences in the U.S. – New Yorkers – in a location where they were previously disconnected: subway stations. Google Offers is sponsoring Boingo Wi-Fi in six subway stations and more than 200 hotzones throughout the city through September 7, and as part of the sponsorship will be offering New Yorkers the chance to check out location-specific offers near them, as well as a reliable Wi-Fi connection to keep them in the know on the go.
