October is one of my favorite months with the Exceeding Expectations kids.  As you all know, our top priority for the kids is, and always will be, education. That said, every October we participate in two athletic events that I feel are significant in laying the groundwork necessary for them to be successful in the academic world and in their adult lives.  The first of these events is the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) triathlon, aptly called “The Best Day in Triathlon.” Here’s a brief overview from their website:  “In 1994, three friends started a triathlon fundraiser to help one man regain his independence after a tragic accident left him a quadriplegic. From one came many, and Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) took root in the belief that sports and an active lifestyle are a pathway to more in life. I try stuff. I synthesize what’s of value with some of the other things I have at my disposal. – Herbie Hancock I pursued a travel interview with the Al/Capone band because of their genius music — a medley of smooth jazz, fusion, R&B, funk and Latin sounds that makes you tap your toes, swing your hips, and wink at the person nearest you. Little did I realize that Al/Capone’s six members are not only musically gifted but they’re also technically savvy. The band leverages audio recording software in the early stages of the composition process, and they have established a wide-reaching social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and MySpace. Read our interview with the amazing Al/Capone jazz band, a quintessential study in the synthesis of traditional jazz and modern day technology. Also, be sure to enjoy music from the band’s latest album, Mr. Smooth, via the music player below and/or download a free song here. What is the best venue Al/Capone has performed at? One venue which stands out was the Water Front Festival in Rockford, IL, a big outdoor festival that is held annually around the end of August. Jeep grew up in Rockford and we had

-

“So, do you get to play a lot of video games?”’ That’s the question I recently put to Maria Stipp, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Owned Properties division of Activision Blizzard (the company behind such hits as Guitar Hero, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and more). Her answer? “I wish I could say my thumbs were worn out from playing video games. But unfortunately my thumbs take far more abuse from my Blackberry.” She puts the Blackberry to good use out of the office, too. An active globetrotter, Maria logs nearly 100,000 miles annually meeting with developers all over the world. Here are a few of her travel tips: When you travel, what is the one item you always take with you? Aside from my Blackberry, I always bring dress shoes. Once I forgot them and had to wear running shoes with my new suit to a senior customer meeting. Not a great look. What are you listening to your on your iPod these days? This assumes I have the time to listen to music. I have three year-old twins – you do the math! What is your favorite dining spot in the world? Currently, I’m
