October is one of my favorite months with the Exceeding Expectations kids.  As you all know, our top priority for the kids is, and always will be, education. That said, every October we participate in two athletic events that I feel are significant in laying the groundwork necessary for them to be successful in the academic world and in their adult lives.  The first of these events is the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) triathlon, aptly called “The Best Day in Triathlon.” Here’s a brief overview from their website:  “In 1994, three friends started a triathlon fundraiser to help one man regain his independence after a tragic accident left him a quadriplegic. From one came many, and Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) took root in the belief that sports and an active lifestyle are a pathway to more in life. Since that fundraiser 25 years ago, CAF has been committed to breaking the financial barrier that individuals with physical challenges face to participate in sports and live a healthy and active lifestyle.”  Participating alongside challenged athletes in a very tough race gives our kids an additional perspective on their own lives. The racers on the course with them face obstacles that they

We’d like to extend hearty congratulations to our fitness guru, Cherie Gruenfeld, for once again winning her age group in the Ironman 70.3 race – this time in Honu, Hawaii! In addition to being one of the toughest races in the biz (warm-up for the Ironman World Championships in October), she also braved some of the most brutal conditions ever seen at this race. 8 Adventures on the Island of Kauai

I recently vacationed on Kauai, the fourth largest of the Hawaiian islands. The island — with its waterfalls, canyons, rainforests, caves and secret beaches at every turn — is a nature lover’s paradise. Since I’ve had the pleasure of multiple visits to the “Garden Isle,” I’ve compiled below my top adventures on Kauai. Also, watch the video above for a visual feast of Kauai. What’s your favorite Hawaiian island, and what are your recommendations for activities there? 1. Take a Hike According to travel website GoHawaii, 90% of Kauai is inaccessible by road. That’s why hiking is the penultimate activity on Kauai. There are a seemingly endless number of trails of varying distances and difficulty. I have frequently stumbled upon deserted beaches, deep canyons, and waterfalls of all sizes. You’ll encounter stunning scenery on any hike you choose but a must-see is Waimea Canyon on the west side of the island. 2. Go Kayaking Rent single or double kayaks and paddle through breathtaking scenery accessible only by boat. I rented kayaks through a tour group led by a knowledgeable guide. We paddled down a river, docked our kayaks, and then hiked to a massive waterfall and watering hole. Lunch was included. Check out

Boingo Kit Triumphs In Hawaii (With A Little Help From Cherie)

-

I wish I could say I get tired of watching Cherie Gruenfeld smash her competition.  But I don’t.  And I love it all the more now that she races in a Boingo kit! I asked Cherie for an update about her last race; below is her summary.  My favorite line?  “I loved it.” “I recently returned from Kona on the big island of Hawaii where I competed in a race called Honu 70.3. This is a Half Ironman distance race (Swim 1.2 miles/ Bike 56 miles / Run 13.1 miles). If you’ve seen the Ironman World Championships on NBC, you’ve watched athletes struggling through the brutal Hawaiian conditions. These same elements played a major role in this day of racing regardless of the fact that the distance is just half the Ironman distance. The swim, in the beautiful blue Pacific, is fraught with currents and waves as the result of strong winds. The bike course is part of the fabled Ironman bike course so we enjoyed the same strong cross-winds while attemptine to stay upright on our bikes. And during the run we had to negotiate the ups and downs of the Mauna Lani golf course along with some road

Meet Boingo’s Official Butt-Kicker

A few years ago, I decided it would be really fun to do a triathlon. Looking back, I’m not sure what aspect I thought would be fun – the freezing cold ocean swims I spent hoping I wouldn’t be eaten by a shark? The minor fortune I spent on equipment? The small death of embarrassment I endured each time I wiggled into to my Spandex training outfit? Hard to say. But I do know one thing that made my journey from novice to triathlete fun was that I got myself a darn good coach – Cherie Gruenfeld. Cherie Gruenfeld is one of the most decorated Master’s triathletes in the world today. She’s competed in twenty-three Ironman races, including the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii 17 times. Now, for the uninitiated, an Ironman triathlon is a study in insanity. It begins with a 2.4 mile swim, continues with a 112 mile bike ride, and concludes with a marathon. (Yes. All on the same day.) Cherie is a master at this particular form of crazy. She’s won the world title in her age group ten times and currently holds the world record for Women 65-69. She is the first female over 55

Need Tips on Traveling With Kids? Ask the Travel Mama.

If you’re a parent, then you know that traveling with kids is no easy feat. It seems most parents with young children travel less frequently or not at all. But not Colleen Lanin. When she became a mother five years ago, the consummate adventurer was determined to continue exploring the world — with her kids in tow. The tips she collected proved helpful, impelling her to share them with the moms and dads of the world. And thus was the genesis of Travel Mamas, a website for traveling with babies, toddlers, children and teens. Currently, Travel Mamas is celebrating its first anniversary with discounts and giveaways. Learn more here. Read about Colleen’s adventures as a travel mama in our interview below. Need additional guidance? Ask your questions in the comments section. What is the most kid-friendly vacation you’ve taken? The most kid-friendly vacation I’ve ever taken is a Disney Mediterranean Cruise, which I took when my daughter was two-and-a-half-years-old. Some vacations seem to focus more on the children’s needs than the parents, while others are more grown-up centric. However, this vacation was such fun
