The Spirit of Boingo

-

According to the corporate consulting firm Bain, winning cultures combine two key elements—high performance values and behaviors + unique personality and soul. We know we have both. From the founding of the company in 2001, culture came first at Boingo. We built our culture as thoroughly as we built our Wi-Fi network. We consciously built a company where people wanted to work and people would succeed.

According to Dave Graveline of “Into Tomorrow,” “Boingo saves the day!” Graveline, an award-winning broadcaster covering technology, has been a longtime Boingo member since the days when we had just over 10,000 hotspots. In the video above, Graveline interviews Boingo CEO Dave Hagan on the company’s progress over the last decade — from the growth of our Wi-Fi ecosystem, the apps we’ve built for easy online access, the Wi-Fi operator partnerships we’ve forged, to how we’ve met the insatiable demand for Internet bandwidth on mobile devices. Watch the video to take a walk down memory lane with Boingo and hear CEO Dave Hagan discuss his vision for the company going forward. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

-

Dear Boingo Customers, Friends and Family, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! As we wind down 2011, I thought I’d take a moment to express gratitude, reflect on the year, and reinforce our 2012 efforts as a company. On behalf of the Boingo team, thank you for supporting the company. Boingo is fortunate to have a customer community who celebrates our successes, engages with us through our social channels, and provides feedback for improvement. Your involvement is a big motivator in our efforts to deliver the best Wi-Fi service possible. 2011 was quite a year for Boingo, most notably because of our IPO in May. This year also marked our ten-year anniversary. The past decade has flown by, and I’m proud we’ve built a sustainable company for the long term. In 2011, we also made great strides toward our strategic goals. We grew from 200,000+ to 400,000+ Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide through existing and new partnerships. We deployed additional Boingo-operated networks in new types of venues including stadiums, malls and restaurants. We launched Wi-Finder, an app that helps you find and connect to free and Boingo hotspots. We expanded our portfolio of gadgets we support. We introduced more flexible Wi-Fi plans and payment options. We

Dave Hagan Talks Boingo Strategy With The Street

-

Boingo CEO Dave Hagan recently talked with financial media company The Street about Boingo’s recent IPO, the Internet market and what’s next for Boingo. Watch the video to learn all about it. Here are the interview highlights on Dave’s vision and strategy for Boingo Wireless: What makes Boingo different from most IPO companies: we’re a strong, stable and profitable business. We’re seeing huge demand for Wi-Fi among mobile device users, especially those connecting on iPads and other tablets. Our wholesale, private-label service (for partners such as Verizon and Skype) continues to be a strong growth channel in addition to our Wi-Fi options for direct consumers. Our plan is to build out new Wi-Fi networks and locations worldwide. We will work with many of our existing partners to help with this effort. The proliferation of Internet-enabled devices along with increasing consumer demand for bandwidth have created a capacity crunch on cellular networks. Thus, expanding Wi-Fi networks is more critical than ever and that’s where Boingo comes in. We’re excited about our growth and initiatives. Good work, boss! Great tie, too! 10 Years of Boingo: A Look Back At The Beginning

-

In the fall of 2000, an idea began to bloom in Sky Dayton’s mind.  A new technology was beginning to emerge – back then referred to as “802.11b” – that enabled people to access the Internet without wires.  As the founder of EarthLink, Sky quickly understood how this technology could transform the whole way in which we connected to the Internet.  If you weren’t attached to the web by a wire – you could get online virtually anywhere.   He imagined a world where people could connect on every type of device imaginable – laptops, cameras, cars and phones – in as many locations as possible. “It’s like trying to imagine all the things we’d use with electricity before electricity had been invented,” he said in a Wired magazine cover story about Boingo in October 2002.  During a snowboarding trip in Mammoth, CA, Sky sketched out the basic idea of how Boingo would work: develop software that makes it dead simple to get a user online, and partner with burgeoning Wi-Fi network operators to create an aggregated network of Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide. The company was incorporated in the spring of 2001 with the stealth name “Project Mammoth” and was eventually named “Boingo”
