October is one of my favorite months with the Exceeding Expectations kids.  As you all know, our top priority for the kids is, and always will be, education. That said, every October we participate in two athletic events that I feel are significant in laying the groundwork necessary for them to be successful in the academic world and in their adult lives.  The first of these events is the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) triathlon, aptly called “The Best Day in Triathlon.” Here’s a brief overview from their website:  “In 1994, three friends started a triathlon fundraiser to help one man regain his independence after a tragic accident left him a quadriplegic. From one came many, and Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) took root in the belief that sports and an active lifestyle are a pathway to more in life. Since that fundraiser 25 years ago, CAF has been committed to breaking the financial barrier that individuals with physical challenges face to participate in sports and live a healthy and active lifestyle.”  Participating alongside challenged athletes in a very tough race gives our kids an additional perspective on their own lives. The racers on the course with them face obstacles that they

3 Merry Apps for Holiday Cards

-

Holiday print cards are always a nice gesture, and they make for great decorations around the house. But e-cards are just as delightful, far more convenient, and environmentally-friendly. Plenty of website and smartphone apps allow you to create e-cards that are personalized and shareable on social networks. So if you’re looking to mix up the season’s greetings, consider our three favorite apps below. Which apps or websites do you recommend for creating and sending holiday ecards? 1. JibJab (Free or $12/year for premium membership) JibJab has been one of our longtime favorite websites for e-greetings. The eCards and videos are funny, and they can be customized to include photos of your recipients. Card and video themes cover the gamut of occasions, including: holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, thank yous, and everything in between. The greetings, many of which are free, include audio, e.g., songs, dialogue, and/or animation. Once you’ve created a card or video, you have the option of sending via email, posting to Facebook, or downloading. We highly recommend the $9.99/year membership, which gives you unlimited access to JibJab’s entire library of creatives, discounts on any videos you wish to download, and the ability to schedule the delivery of a greeting for a later date/time. Boingo Summer Travels 2011: A Photo Slideshow With Animoto

-

Click play on the video above and check out the array of destinations visited by the Boingo community this past summer in 2011. Just a word of caution: the photos could trigger or exacerbate the post-summer blues. If you’ve seen our videos before, you might recognize that we often use Animoto to produce our videos. Unlike standard photo slideshow programs with static presentations, Animoto creates polished and animated visual stories that look polished and professional. The company says the foundation of their platform is a “patent-pending Cinematic Artificial Intelligence technology that thinks like an actual director and editor.” We couldn’t tell you what that means exactly but we can guarantee that the resulting production — complete with a music soundtrack — will make you look like a cinematic genius. Animoto offers a range of pricing plans, including: Lite for free, Plus for $30/year, Pro for $249/year and a Reseller option for $499/year. Here’s a quick tutorial on the Animoto user interface: Step 1: Choose a template. Animoto offers various background templates, some of which are available to free accounts. There are also several holiday themes. Step 2: Upload photos and/or video clips. You can retrieve media from your computer, Facebook,

Introducing: Boingo Wi-Finder!

We’re super excited to share the news that today we’re launching our best app yet – Boingo Wi-Finder! As you know, Boingo software has always made it easy to get online at paid hotspots around the world.   Now we’re expanding that capability to find and get you connected to FREE hotspots, too!  Boingo Wi-Finder quickly connects you to open networks worldwide, like the free Wi-Fi at your neighborhood library or even an exotic coffee shop in a far-away land. Simply select “Connect” when Boingo Wi-Finder pops and you’re in. We’ve also added map and search tools that can find the nearest hotspot. And even cooler — the app automatically grabs information about free hotspots you connect to – like location and speed – and then publishes that information to the Location Database.  The more people use the app, the better the Location Directory gets.  (So tell your friends!)  You can even add your favorite free hotspot directly here. We think Boingo Wi-Finder is our coolest app yet – here’s just a sample of what’s under the hood! Determines the best free network if more than one is available Alerts you when a free or Boingo hotspot is detected nearby Connects

Hashable: a New Way to Exchange Business “Cards”

At SXSW Interactive this year, many attendees skipped the business cards and instead swapped contact info via Hashable, “the ultimate networking app.” Hashable was super useful for us during SXSW (since we ran out of business cards the first day), and it’s an environmentally-friendly solution. The Hashable app (free), available on iPhone and Android devices, allows you to: Exchange contact information by entering the Twitter handle or email address associated with the other person’s Hashable profile. Check in to a location and tag the people with you. The check-in can be a public one that tweets your location and companions, or it can be used as a CRM tool that allows you to privately note meetings with people in  your network. See who your contacts are meeting through an “Activity” tab that displays public check-ins. If you’d like to give Hashable a try, sign up for an account here. To download the app for iPhone, click here. To download the app for Android, click here. Let us know if you find Hashable as useful as we did. Already have a Hashable account? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
