Come Together on World Wi-Fi Day

World Wi-Fi Day is today, June 20th. For us, it’s a big deal. As you know, Wi-Fi is our thing! To celebrate, today we’re hooking up the public (literally and figuratively) with fast and free Wi-Fi sessions through the Boingo Media network at select airports, shopping malls, restaurants, coffee shops and other locations. But what is World Wi-Fi Day all about?

World Wi-Fi Day was started by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) and aims to promote, fund and support Wi-Fi deployments for underserved and unconnected communities around the globe. Wi-Fi plays an important role in socioeconomic development, and helps accelerate affordable connectivity. Google, AT&T and Cisco are among the list of additional companies supporting this initiative. Boingo is also actively involved with the WBA, and our very own CTO Dr. Derek Peterson serves on the board.

So why did this all start? Back in 2001, Wi-Fi was affectionately known as ‘802.11.’ While it seems like nowadays you can get Wi-Fi almost anywhere, there’s still more work to be done. Boingo is honored to be part of this meaningful initiative, and we’re doing what we can to accelerate access to Wi-Fi around the world. If you’d like to join us and pledge your support, visit
