About Cherie

Cherie Gruenfeld, Boingo's official butt-kicker, is an Ironman age group champion and world record holder. She is a grand masters triathlete — a sport in which she didn't even start competing in until her 40s — proving that top fitness is achievable at any age. She has raced in more than 25 Ironman triathlons, has 18 wins overall, and has won her age group at the Ironman World Championships a whopping 13 times. My Life Today


I finished my season three weeks ago, but that didn’t mean I had no more events on the calendar. In fact, my schedule was loaded with trips and events. First off was an Olympic race in Santa Barbara. Then we’d be off to Kona – not to race this year, but as spectators. We planned to hurry home from the Big Island in time to participate in the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) event in San Diego, followed by the Tram Challenge in Palm Springs the week after. And the list of activities went on and on. But those plans came to a screeching halt in the blink of an eye. Remember that Olympic race in Santa Barbara? Well, that’s where the unraveling began with a bike collision one mile from T2. Fortunately, the other rider was unharmed. Me…. not so much. I’m sitting here today with four fractures in my pelvis, which means no weight-bearing for 4-6 weeks. If you are an athlete or live with one, you know that hearing this is like a death sentence. There Really Might be a “Silver Bullet”


We athletes spend a lot of time wishing – maybe even hoping and praying – that there’s one “silver bullet” that offers the answer to better performance and health. How’s that working out for us? That being said, I believe I have an interesting take on this issue. I recently read a very informative book by Joe Friel called Fast After 50: How to Race Strong for the Rest of your Life. If you’re a young buck, don’t be so quick to roll your eyes. The title of this book could just as easily have been: How to Race Strong – for Everyone. It just so happens that what makes you a success when you’re a younger athlete is the same thing that will make you a success as you age. So where does this silver bullet business come in? Is there a single thing that could make the difference? Maybe. Friel contends that as we age, we tend to believe that our training should get gentler, so we back off and slow down. Ahhh…Youth!


While doing a trail run recently I passed a group of six older folks. My best guess is that these “spry” seniors were in their early 60s and out taxing themselves with a brisk hike in the hills. It was a single track, so they moved aside to let me continue my run. Exceeding Expectations: Annual Swimathon and Runathon


EE’s annual Swimathon/Runathon event took place on the morning of Sunday, January 20th, in Loma Linda and San Bernardino. Twenty kids swam as many laps as they could in an hour, and twenty ran as far as they could in thirty minutes. Twelve of the kids did both events.
