Boingo CTO Dr. Derek Peterson a Featured Panelist at Light Reading’s Big Telecom Event in Chicago
Since 2011, Boingo and other industry leaders have collaborated with the Wireless Broadband Alliance, the Wi-Fi Alliance and the GSMA to develop the standards that make connecting to Wi-Fi as easy and secure as cellular, and that ease network congestion for carriers.
Three years and many trials later, 2014 has seen the first true public deployments of Hotspot 2.0 technology, by Boingo in U.S. airports, Time Warner Cable across the U.S., and by Orange Poland at the country’s largest park.
It’s exciting that the Light Reading’s Leading Lights awards, the telecom industry’s prestigious awards program, have nominated two Hotspot 2.0 deployments for their “Most Innovative Carrier Wi-Fi Deployment” award this year, and we’re absolutely thrilled to be one of the nominees!
Boingo made the shortlist for our one-of-a-kind Hotspot 2.0 network deployments in more than 20 airports across the U.S. that serve more than 445 million passengers each year. The functionality eliminates the need for logins, landing page redirects and apps, dramatically improving the user connectivity experience.
Currently available for subscribers with late-model iOS 7 devices and Macintosh laptops running OS X Mavericks (10.9), the Hotspot 2.0 networks are easy to access. Users interested in having a secure, seamless connection can visit Boingo’s Next Generation Hotspot microsite to download their profile.
We’re proud be an early adopter of Hotspot 2.0 technology, to move the standards out of the test bed and into the real world for the first time, and to open our Hotspot 2.0 networks to our customers and to other industry players. And we’re extraordinarily proud to be a Leading Lights nominee, in the company of many other distinguished industry leaders.
We’re looking forward to the awards ceremony, taking place June 17 in Chicago. To attend this VIP event, register soon, as tickets are going fast!
Be sure to also check out the line-up for Light Reading’s first ever Big Telecom Event (BTE). Boingo’s own Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Derek Peterson, will be a featured panelist in the discussion “Small Cells and Wi-Fi: Managing the Chaos,” also on June 17.
The agenda is chock full of keynotes and sessions addressing the industry’s hottest topics, with featured speakers from Sprint, Google, Alcatel-Lucent and Telefónica, among many others. Be sure to register here for this two-day next gen conference in the Windy City, and wish us luck in the Leading Lights awards!
