Boingo CEO Delivers Keynote at CCA Annual Convention

The Competitive Carriers Association (CCA), the nation’s leading association for competitive wireless providers serving all areas of the U.S., held its 20th annual convention in Las Vegas, NV on September 24-26, 2012.

Boingo’s fearless leader, President and CEO Dave Hagan, presented a keynote address on mobile data growth trends and discussed how small cells and Wi-Fi are helping solve network congestion problems by supporting the shift from the coverage model to the density model, meaning wireless networks already offer ample geographic coverage but the density of wireless enabled devices is creating capacity challenges, especially indoors.

Why the capacity crunch? Traditional wireless networks were originally designed to handle voice calls outdoors. As smartphones reached critical mass, consumer behavior changed dramatically, and as Dave shared during his session, 65% of all mobile data traffic occurs indoors.

Consider this fascinating stat that he brought up with his audience of fellow wireless carriers: 1 data customer = 100 voice customers. And no, that’s not a typo. To put it simply, data demand has outstripped capacity and Wi-Fi offers higher performance, lower cost and ubiquity across devices, which is exactly why large wireless carriers are already using Wi-Fi to offload data traffic from their cellular networks.

During the conference, the CCA announced a strategic partnership with Boingo to offer Wi-Fi offload solutions to CCA members, enabling carriers to extend the reach of their networks across Boingo’s global footprint spanning more than 500,000 Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the world. For CCA members, deploying Boingo’s “white label” solution delivers seamless Wi-Fi roaming to their customers—the Wi-Fi offload process can be automatic, and consumers won’t even know when they’re roaming onto a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Now I’m no device whisperer, but I think I hear smartphones, tablets and Wi-Fi enabled devices everywhere rejoicing in the good news!
