What Do You Love? Google Gives it to You

Google just covertly launched a new search tool, and now we’re about to let you in on the secret. We first heard the news from Mashable, who says the “mysterious service” has not officially been announced by Google. It’s a mystery to us how Mashable found out.

Ready for the big reveal? The new Google product is “What Do You Love?” and it’s a search service that displays a multi-media array of your results in a boxed layout. The results pull from Google’s tools and platforms — allowing you to see videos, alerts, trends, photos, translations, maps, etc. related to your search term. However, the search results are limited to Google products. That means, for example, that videos are limited to those on YouTube and photos are limited to those on Picasa. Perhaps Google will include non-Google content when it officially launches What Do You Love?

The What Do You Love? page format is easy on the eyes, and some of the search boxes resemble widgets that enable you to use a specific Google function without leaving the portal. For instance, you can play videos in the YouTube box and scroll through the different video results within the webpage . You can also click to open a new browser to display a specific Google page.

It’s clear why What Do You Love? hasn’t officially debuted: it needs some fixing up and fine-tuning. The user experience isn’t entirely smooth, some of the text looks a bit wonky, and the search results are scant and not always relevant. But the potential usefulness of the tool is evident: What Do You Love? is essentially a convenient, one-page portal to Google’s full suite of tools.

So what do you love? Do you happen to love any of the things we do? Watch our What Do You Love? video demo to check out a few of our favorite things.

WDYL is pretty rad. At first I thought it was a joke but was surprised at how interesting of a experience it was. It’s nice to see Google try some crazy new ideas. For a minute they began to feel like Microsoft.

Mike, yeah, WDYL has a lot of potential but it definitely needs to be smoothed out, hence the quiet roll-out. Thanks for your comment and hope you have a fabulous weekend!
