Need Fitness Motivation? Work Out With a Team.

This Saturday, March 5, a group of Boingo employees will gamely attempt their first triathlon in La Quinta, CA. These are folks who spend hours working as a group towards corporate goals. But this weekend, they’re laying it all out there – as a team – and shooting for personal fitness goals.

When I joined the Boingo family, I brought along my belief that everyone can benefit from some sort of fitness program. However, I’m well aware that many folks find it a bit intimidating to start a fitness program. You’ll be happy to know that there’s a very good solution to that problem, and the Boingo folks are an excellent example.

Being a part of a group and having a goal upon which the group is committed are two of the best possible motivators for getting into a fitness routine and sticking with it.

–  When you’re having an “off” day, someone who’s feeling strong will pull you along. You’ll do the same when it’s your “on” day.

–  You always know that others are counting on you: if you commit to meeting at the gym, you’re expected to show up. Whether you feel like getting out of bed or not, you must.

–  Each of you is sticking your neck out, taking on a personal challenge. If your partners can do this, so can you!

–  Although it’s an individual goal, it’s the team that’s taken on this goal. You’ll become involved in helping others meet their particular goal and that’s very gratifying.

In my years of competing in big, high profile races, the thing that always takes me back to my roots and makes me remember why I love sport (sport of any kind) is when I’m doing a local event. I see teammates high-fiving as they pass each other, offering encouragement and sometimes racing every step of the way together. I stand at the finish line with some of the team as they await their other members. Each crosses the finish line, regardless of time, with a great sense of self-satisfaction and a strong feeling of pride for having given one for the team. And they’ve each gotten a little fitter and had a wonderful time doing it. It doesn’t get any better than this!

This weekend, I’ll be there supporting my Boingo teammates. I’ll be cheering and offering encouragement along the way and ready at the finish line with a hearty “Congratulations!” And I’m sure the first question each will ask is:  “When can we do it again?”

    Doing yearly triathalons is truely an effective way to transform your living style to a more healthy one. These events are not extreme and therefore not too taxing. It feels great to train for a specific goal/event and see yourself transform
