Follow a Loved One’s Surgery, Tweet by Tweet

Over the Labor Day weekend, I found out that one of my best friends had an emergency appendectomy while vacationing overseas. I was updated now and then on my friend’s progress via text messaging, but as you can imagine, the progress reports were too far and few between to assuage my anxiety.

In contrast, as reported by Geek With Laptop, Joe Clearly had no problem getting regular updates on his mother’s operation at St. Luke’s hospital in Iowa. Before she went into surgery, Monna Clearly gave the hospital’s spokeswoman permission to post updates via Twitter. This meant Joe Clearly got to follow his mother’s progress tweet by tweet, in real time from the operating room!
